Welcome!
I'm so glad you've found your way here for mental health counseling!
I have had numerous clients tell me, "Maria, if I had known what I know now through counseling, I would have decided on things so differently, that my life would have been completely different!" This is one of the most important lessons I learned. I am honored and it is a true pleasure to offer the gift of counseling services to clients. When you are ready to have a better, fuller, juicier life, that is the time to participate in psychotherapy. It is a worthwhile experience to learn, improve, and live your life like never before. Counseling gives way to changing your life 90 or even 180 degrees guaranteeing improvement in this adventure called LIFE!
I am a holistically-minded psychotherapist in private practice in downtown Waynesville, North Carolina and I’m passionate about facilitating growth and wellbeing in my clients. I invite you to come to join me on a journey toward fuller health and balance, greater connectedness and peace, deeper trust, and mainly, joy! I utilize an array of techniques alongside creativity, education, humor, and movement to help my clients feel understood, heal, and then grow. I adjust my style to what I sense a client needs as a whole person: body, mind, and even spirit.
My approach includes a series of eclectic theories that will allow you to integrate your mind and body, taking you to another level. I work with a variety of issues, including all forms of anxiety, depression and mood disorders, sleep problems, trauma, and traumatic experiences such as abuse, and relationship problems. I also specialize in helping people with the psychological components of improving their overall quality of life. Psychotherapy is not only for the 'bad times' but also to learn and expand the wealth of knowledge in living life to the fullest potential!
Mindfulness practice and principles infuse all of my work – whether with individuals, couples, or groups. Whatever the issue, I focus on helping clients heal from their mind and body.
I am a firm and passionate believer in the connection between our brain and body. I like to think of my counseling skills as being an interpreter of the body and mind's "language". Did you know that our minds (feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes) can affect our biological functioning either negatively or positively?
In this time and age, we humans invest in all kinds of things. However, very few invest in themselves. Which one are you? IF you made it to this website, it appears that you may be the type that is insightful enough to value your person in this once-in-a-lifetime journey...and you know what, I can tell you with 100% certainty that YOU ARE worth it! Life is short and time flies. What are you waiting for? I am truly blessed to have experienced this opportunity myself and now have the opportunity to pay it forward through my counseling skills and profession!
I can't wait to meet you and share some quality time with you at this moment of your life. It's always my pleasure to have these opportunities to exchange the value of humanity in each of us. Like I said...welcome!

Maria Averza, dedicated her whole career to assisting those in need. Especially those who are unable to access counseling services due to limitations with the English language. Maria has an extensive career in different organizations such as Appalachian Community Services, Western North Carolina Community Health Services, and Our Voice, conducting roles of direct therapeutic contact with clients who are experiencing very difficult situations including sexual assault, domestic violence, profound loss, and discrimination. She demonstrated a tremendous multicultural awareness and very impressive empathic abilities with her clients. Her commitment to the cause is unparalleled in the WNC area. There is a total lack of counselors dedicating time to this population. Maria demonstrated leadership in every organization in which she worked.
